Negotiate.Negotiate is a natural progression from the very successful primary programme R time which is used successfully both in the UK and USA.
The R time programme was seen to be most successful in developing in children a sense of emotional well-being, a raising of self esteem and the attendant improvement in general performance as well as behaviour. The programme Negotiate relying on the same successful principals and ethos is seen as a natural secondary progression. Using Negotiate provides time for teachers to develop student empathy; the building and enhancing of student relationships; the breaking down of barriers of gender, ethnicity, religion and fear. Negotiate develops mutual respect whilst fostering good manners, the skills of listening and speaking and the interpersonal skills which are the stuff of human relationships. |
Being a head teacher has taught me the need to develop the whole child including the emotional, social and relationship side of each student. Together we learnt to regard the development of this side of their lives not so much as a chore but as a challenge which enables better learning to take place. I recognised that fostering the emotional development of my pupils/students would enhance their self esteem and better enable them as learners. As a magistrate, working frequently within the youth court, I have time and again been struck by the considerable number of defendants who are reported as having poor communication skills, low self esteem and poor emotional well being. The devastating effect of such human condition is never an excuse for offending but is part of the components that certainly affect the way the individual will behave, and is something we can improve. Put simply, I have a passion for enabling children and young people to feel better about themselves, their relationships and to have and to display a confidence as both a learner and as a developing adult.
